The Vodafone
Oaks and Vodafone Derby
Friday 2nd June and Saturday 3rd June
2006
Epsom Racecourse
There are countless Derby's around the world but the Vodafone
Epsom Derby offers the unique challenge that pits the best horses
of the Classic generation, ridden by the best jockeys around a
course unlike any other anywhere in the world, and that consequently
creates champions. That's why The Vodafone Derby is known as The
Blue Riband of the Turf. That's why The Derby is the spiritual
heart of flat racing.
Ever since the Derby was first run back in 1780 the crowd has been
a central element of the occasion. The Derby is the highlight in
the European flat racing calendar for 3 year olds over 1 1/2 miles.
Its sister race, the Oaks, is run the day before, and is Britain's
most valuable race for 3 year old fillies.
The Derby
The day has a more festive atmosphere than any other day in the
racing calendar with vast crowds and the mood of a giant fair. The
tradition derives from Victorian times when it was seen as an unofficial
holiday for Londoners of all classes.
The Oaks
Now held on the first or second Friday in June, is a great crowd
puller, particularly in recent years as it affords the opportunity
to take a day off from work !
